What Fabrics Are Used to Make Airforce Jackets and Clothing?
Various fabrics can be used to make clothes. All of these fabrics have their own advantages and disadvantages. Also, a fabric that is suitable for making jackets isn’t necessarily the right choice for T-shirts or trousers. That is why we would like to give you a little insight into what fabrics are used to make Airforce jackets and clothing. However, no matter which specific fabric we use, we ensure that all items available from our online store are made using the highest-quality fabrics.
Polyester of the Best Possible Quality
The most common fabric among Airforce jackets is polyester. In fact, many of our jackets are made entirely out of polyester, though we also offer jackets that are made from a mix of fabrics, such as polyester and cotton. Polyester is the most common fabric among our collection for a reason, as it has a number of properties that make it ideal for making jackets. It’s a very lightweight fabric, making clothing made from it exceptionally comfortable. Polyester is also soft to the touch, so you can even wear a polyester jacket if you wear a short-sleeve T-shirt underneath it.
A polyester jacket will also retain its good looks for a long time, because polyester is very wrinkle-resistant and colourfast, even after repeated washing. One of the most persistent rumours about polyester is that it isn’t very breathable. That used to be the case, as the first generation of polyester garments had poor air circulation, which caused those who wore those garments to overheat quickly. In the past few decades, however, various weaving and knitting techniques have been developed that have made it possible to manufacture polyester that is every bit as breathable as the likes of cotton.
Some of our
and boys are partially made from Repreve polyester. To make this fabric, recycled plastic bottles are fashioned into yarn. So, despite polyester being a synthetic fabric, Repreve is actually a very eco-friendly choice. It makes for an excellent T-shirt fabric, because it is soft to the touch, very breathable, and water-repellent. The remaining 50 percent of these T-shirts consists of cotton.Various Types of Cotton
Cotton is another fabric that is very common among our collections. Sometimes as part of a fabric mix with polyester, but much more often as the only fabric in our T-shirts, jumpers, hoodies, trousers, and knitwear. Cotton has been one of the most popular clothing fabrics for hundreds of years, and it is easy to understand why. Cotton is soft to the touch, breathable enough to keep you from overheating, and it can absorb a lot of water. In addition, cotton is a flexible fabric that will not get in the way. Some types of cotton are even slightly stretchy.
Some of our T-shirts and trousers are made from 100 percent organic cotton. This cotton was produced following strict environmental guidelines, as a result of which growing and processing the cotton plants will burden the environment as little as possible. Since no chemical substances, such as pesticides or colourants, are allowed during these processes, the fabric is completely devoid of any residue of these substances. Wearing clothing made from organic cotton therefore significantly decreases the risk of allergic reactions, such as itching or rashes.
Strong and Lightweight: Nylon
Some of our jackets have an outer shell made from nylon. In most cases, that concerns both the layer of fabric that is exposed to the air and the layer of fabric on the inside of the jacket. Nylon is notably more wear-resistant than most other synthetic fibres. As a result, a nylon jacket will retain its good looks for a long time, and the strength of the fabric will prevent the jacket from tearing easily. And since we offer jackets in various beautiful colours, the fact that nylon fibres are great at absorbing dyes is another advantage of this fabric.
Nylon’s water-repellent character can be a double-edged sword, though. A nylon jacket will offer better protection against a rain shower than a jacket that is made entirely out of cotton. However, nylon has a tendency to feel clammy and damp, and during warm days, you can get sweaty in nylon clothing quite quickly. Since nylon is relatively thin and very lightweight, though, a nylon summer jacket can be stowed away in your bag or tied around your waist conveniently whenever necessary. Our nylon
, on the other hand, are allowed to retain heat. We frequently mix nylon and cotton as well.Stretchy Fabrics, Such as Spandex or Elastane
If you are looking for garments that are as comfortable as possible, slightly stretchy fabrics might just be the way to go for you. After all, a fabric that gives a little bit when you move is less likely to get in the way. Those looking for maximum mobility are recommended to wear clothing that is somewhat stretchy. A fabric can be made stretchy by the way it has been produced; knitted fabrics, such as jersey cotton, are always slightly stretchy. However, using elastic fibres that are stretchy by nature, such as spandex or elastane, is a viable option as well.
Our jackets and garments are never entirely made from elastic fibres. Instead, around 5 percent of the fabric is typically made out of spandex or elastane. That way, you can enjoy the benefits of stretchy fibres, but those that – for example – cotton or polyester offer as well. Our
and women are excellent examples: these are somewhat stretchy, allowing you to move freely while hiking or cycling. Clothing made from stretchy fabrics also tends to retain its shape, as the fabric has a tendency to restore its original form.
Lined with DuPont™ Sorona®
Down jackets used to be the most reliable choice if you were looking for optimal protection against the cold. Duck or goose down was preferred for its exceptional insulating properties, especially in relation to its limited weight. Over the past few decades, however, various synthetic fibres have been developed, eliminating the necessity to use natural down in order to line a warm winter jacket. A significant portion of our winter jackets has been lined with DuPont™ Sorona® fibres, for example. That is also why we commonly refer to our thick, puffy padded jackets as
rather than .DuPont™ Sorona® offers the exact same advantages as natural down: it’s very lightweight, but great at keeping the cold from penetrating your jacket. Also, it retains your body heat in the air pockets that our linings have. DuPont™ Sorona® may even surpass natural down, as it is more water-repellent and quicker-drying. It is also an eco-friendly choice, as these fibres are made using plant-based materials from renewable sources. Also, less energy is used and fewer greenhouse gases are emitted when compared to the production of similar options.
Although puffer jackets have taken over the function of traditional down jackets, some of our parkas, ski jackets,
and are also lined with DuPont™ Sorona® fibres.Strong and Soft: Polyamide
Among our
, our and our , you can find various garments that are either partially or entirely made from polyamide. Polyamide and polyester are often mentioned in the same breath, as they are produced in similar ways, and have a lot in common. Both are strong, wrinkle-resistant fabrics that are soft and pleasant to the touch. And since polyamide feels softer than polyester, it might in fact be the more comfortable option of the two. Also, since polyamide is a knitted fabric, garments made with it are slightly stretchy.Polyamide doesn’t really have any big disadvantages once clothing has been made from it. For some people, it could be a disadvantage that the fabric feels warm rather quickly, but
or are garments you actually wear for the additional warmth they offer. For our knitwear, we often combine polyamide and spandex or elastane in order to further enhance the elasticity that this fabric has.Knitwear with Modal
Contrary to most fabrics found in our collections, modal is neither fully synthetic nor entirely natural. Modal is made using beech wood from sustainably managed forests – a natural resource – which then is processed synthetically. During this process, 10 to 20 percent less water is used than during the production of cotton. The resulting fabric is smooth and soft to the touch, and it is very breathable. Modal can be dyed very easily, and it will retain the colour it gets in the process for a long time. In addition, modal is insensitive to shrinkage and pilling.
At the moment, modal can exclusively be found among our knitwear for men. The vests in this part of our men’s collection are typically made using a combination of modal, cotton, polyamide, and spandex. This combination of fabrics also provides an excellent solution to the biggest disadvantage of modal: the fact that it tends to wrinkle and sag. The elastic fibres in these vests counteract that.
